Preconditions: 1) You have a ship that is equipped with Detailed Surface Scanner, Planetary Vehicle Hangar, and a SRV in that hangar. 2) You are currently on a carrier that is close by a Crystal Forest, either in the same system or in a nearby system.

- Start game as ED: Horizons in Solo.
- Exit the carrier and jump to supercruise.
- If this is your first time in Hip 36601 or Outotz LS-K D8-3 systems, cut your speed to zero, and then honk the Discovery Scanner. Enter into scan mode with the ‘ key (single quote mark next to the Enter Key on North American keyboards). Identify all bodies in the system. Exit this mode with BACKSPACE key.
- Fly to the moon that has a Crystal Forest. (See list below.)
- Map the moon with Detailed Surface Scanner (if you haven’t already).
- Crystal Forests will appear as Biological POIs.
- Target a POI and land at that location. (Best POI for each moon are listed below.)
- Launch your SRV and drive into the field of shards.
- Many of the shards will have targetable “fruit” called Crystalline Clusters. This fruit provides the level 4 raw material offered by that particular Crystal Forest. Target each fruit and fire at it with SRV weapon until is breaks off and falls to the ground. Note, you may need to adjust your SRV position to have a clear shot at the fruit. Also note, some fruit will never break off. If a fruit doesn’t fall off by 8th fired round, change position and try again. If you are pointing right at the fruit and it doesn’t fall off by 8th round again, move on. There’s no point wasting time and ammo.
- Target the fallen fruit, which now shows up as the level 4 raw material.
- Open scoop, drive over the raw material where it lands.
- Repeat until you are max’d out on that raw material.
- Fly to the next moon that has a Crystal Forest and repeat.
To max out on lower level materials, you’ll need to make a few trips back and forth to raw material traders to trade down your level 4 materials. This will have to be done several times for each type of raw material. Carrier may make a few trips back and forth between Crystal Forests and a raw material trader. However, you may also just want to make the trade-down trips on your own, if your timing is not aligned with carrier planned jumps.
Troubleshooting
You may get your SRV stuck on a shard. In this event, if you are unable to free your SRV, then exit the game to desktop and start the game in ED: Odyssey. You will be back in your SRV, but with no shards around. Move forward a slight amount to make sure you won’t be in trouble with obstacles when you reënter ED: Horizons. Exit to Desktop again, and start the game back in ED: Horizons. You should still be back in the Crystal Forest, but no longer stuck on a shard. Alternatively, you can exit the game and start original ED, which will place you in normal space outside the exclusion zone of the planet, then you can exit and return to ED: Horizons, but you’ll need to reland and your your intended POI.

Selenium
The raw material of Selenium is not available at any of the Crystal Forests. The lower level materials of the Selenium category are fairly common (Iron, Zinc, and Tin). However, to max out on all raw materials, you may wish to consider side trading from other level 4 materials to Selenium and its lower level materials. Side trading will require several more trips between farming at the Crystal Forests and the closest material trader.
